July 25, 2009: Jupiter impact spot

Rich Neuschaefer

This last Saturday (July 25th) I was doing volunteer work at Lick Observatory (a little east of San Jose, CA).

By midnight the Jupiter had cleared the trees and at 208x had a very nice view of the NEB, SEB and the impact spot. The white oval a little north of the impact spot was also easy to see. The dark impact spot was a little smaller than I expected. There also seemed to be quite a bit of other activity in the south polar region.

There was a big split in the SEB and NEB was lumpy. Some hints of festooning in the EZ. If I could have waited for Jupiter to transit the festooning may have been easier to see.

Scope: Astro-Physics 155EDF
Mount: Astro-Physics 900GTO
Eyepiece: Pentax SMC-XL 5.2mm
Filter: none
