Land's End, San Francisco, Feb. 19

Dave Goggin

My observing buddy and I decided to take advantage of the clear night to do some informal observing at Land's End in S.F.

As usual, we used a 9.25" SCT

Successes:
- NGC 1907: first time seeing this object. Was small but nice.
- NGC 1647: surprised how large it is. Sparse but still pleasing cluster
- Dolidze 26: One of the very few DSO's in CMi. Sparse but nice cluster
- M65 and M66: both were quite easy to see however we were mostly seeing their cores and not much else beyond.
- NGC 2775: Surprisingly visible for such a seldom-observed galaxy
- Saturn: Very clear image. Saw titan, dione, rhea, enceladus, and iapetus too.
- Ceres
- M81: Surprisingly visible tonight
- Misc. easy eye pleasers: M42, M38, M41

Failures:
- M101: still haven't been able to see it from S.F. despite spotting it from both Fremont Peak and DARC observatory.
- omicron2 Eri: couldn't really resolve the interesting red/white dwarf pair, seeing?
- NGC 2477: Totally obscured by near-horizon glow
- NGC 2627: Totally obscured by near-horizon glow
- NGC 3628: Neither of us could see/find it.
