I was enrolled in a great class at a local high school: Astronomy 101, The Summer Sky. It is taught by Rich Lohman, who lives in San Geronimo and has just completed an observatory in his back yard. As a final, we were invited to his house to do some 'real' observing (we had his fine telescope at the school, but it is pretty light saturated at the school.) Wednesday was a particularly fine night. No wind and very clear skies. Rich set up his scope and calibrated it, and in the mean time, we took some quick views through a 10" Dob at Jupiter and a few other pieces of eye candy. After his scope was aligned, we took a tour of the skies starting with Jupiter and its moons. Rich's scope being mounted on a massive pier, gave us a very fine stable view of the heavens! We then moved through M2, M11, M13, M16, M27, M31 and M57. As sort of a 'final' he asked the class to describe what each of us saw, and what we thought it was; open cluster, globular, nebula or galactic. Since we were all neophytes, it was a truly a terrific ending to the class. Six weeks went by like a meteoroid!-Marc
