CalStar2008

Scott Baker

This was the first time I've gone to CalStar, and I had a great time. Arriving Thursday I set up in the back of the dark area at the border of the casual area. With Greg LaFlamme, Bob Jardine, Milt, the Georges, Albert, and Mr's Kingsly and Johnson. The first night at one of these events is always hard on me after driving all day and setting up camp in the heat, so I just went after eye candy and some objects off of a sky tools list. It was a very nice night, cool, but not too cold with decent seeing.

Night two was much better. I spent the night going after arps and got about 20 of them. I decided to do some sky commander assisted star hopping to get them. I would use sky commander to get me to something close by that's bright, then star hop to the arp. It was a lot of fun, especially when the object's arpyness (arpiness?) would show up in my 14.5" dob. I'm seriously thinking about dumping sky commander all together and just star hopping from now on. Anyway, that was a blast.

Night three, I was a little under the weather and wound up crashing a little early. But still, it was a great night. Did a handful more arps looked at a bit more eye candy and hit the Ol sleeping bag. On Thursday night the someone had pointed out the Gegenschein near Pisces. I woke up early Sunday morning at about 5:00am and saw the zodiacal light in the eastern pre-dawn sky. I also got a look at the winter milky way arching up behind Orion. It was pretty cool to see both sections in one night.

Looking forward to next year,

Scott
