Surprisingly great night

by Richard Ozer

Last night was the 50th anniversary of the Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society; and the ribbon cutting for the new "warming room" / classroom that we've installed next to the observatory. Peet's Coffee showed up as a sponsor, and we had over 200 visitors. We were pretty sure that we would be skunked; and limited only to daytime views of Venus and Saturn before the clouds rolled in and hid everything. But, just like others reported, the skies started to open up around 8:30 and eventually the clouds cleared out completely.

We had about 25 telescopes in all; and endless lines of first time observers eager to see what we were showing. I didn't have time to look for anything new; so I spent the evening showing Saturn, M3, and M81 in the observatory's C-14. Saturn was well worth it; and the obvious hit with the public. We still had a crowd well into the night; all in all a great night...
