More Observing in OZ...

by Shneor Sherman

Last night was pretty good from 6:15 to 12:45. Using the Argo Navis and SErvo Cat I found several Abell clusters, and observed a number of galaxies in each custer. (Forgot to bring the cluster list with me to the computer. ) They are among the Abells with the brightest galaxies in the Southern skies (brightest around mag 13.6). I viewed a number of globulars, including the magnificent N2808, and a number of planearies, including the Blue Planetary in Centaurus, a bluish disk with a tiny dark area in the center (viewed with a 4.8mm Nag). I spent the latter part of the evening in Pavo and Indus, viewing galaxies. N6876, 6872 and 6877 (right next to a star) would be a Hickson if visible up north. Also viewed N6771, 6770, 6769 - well, it's a long list.

I want to try and describe the Eta Carinae area. First, of course, there's the Homunculus, a bright star encased in a flattish yellow egg-shaped nebula. It's relativelyt small, like the Trapezium. To the east (I think) is a broad strip of nebulosity, with two star clusters embedded in the nebulosity. There's a dark area above, and another strip of nebulosity. There's nore nubulisity aroiund the Eta Carinae area. This is such a stunning object, and it beats anything in the northern skies by far.

I wanted to look at objects in the SMC, but by the time it was high enough, clouds had rolled in, so I shut down the equipment and closed the dome up.

Clear skies,
Shneor
