Montebello Wed 7Nov07 Fog below for sweet skies above

Mark Johnston

George Feliz and myself ended up with a very good sky ranking up fairly high on my Montebello experiences. George was setup by the time I arrived and was observing by 6:30 (Gotta love winter clock). Around 10pm we counted the PEG triangle for 10-11 stars for separate counts which yielded 5.8 skies and the SQM meter was at a sky brightness of 20.87 at 9pm and darkest at 20.08 at 11pm. This unusually dark level was of course due to all the fog over San Jose which was a mini-adventure driving home where I came across a group of 3 racoons (normally I see them solo) and the normal deer count of 4.

George was off in assorted galaxy groups and shared a few views with us both discussing if we saw some fuzzies or not in a few cases. I had meant to get back to 7331 which he took the time to dial up. My goal was to see the 4th of the apparent members which was 7336 and is smaller so I missed it last time out. A good time all the same. Very few galaxies on my target list for the night so thanks George for rounding things out. Galaxies are my #1 favorite challenge.

Having caught up on the observable Herschel 400 list till later in the year I decided to work on objects on the SAC110 list that were not H400 targets. There are quite a few with many of them being quite a bit more advanced than I had thought the SAC110 list would be trying to cover. Some of the very faint nebula were dark enough so I passed them by until I really dug down and identified that I had to be right on top of the begger and then tried OIII or careful observing to dig them out. My conception before last night is they were maybe a notch harder than Messier but many were at the level of the toughest Messier objects or worse.

Notes for the night of Observations:

7Nov07 Montebello. George Feliz and myself. Great skies due to fog over San Jose. SQM: 20.87 at 10pm 21.10 1130pm, 8 stars in peg triangle or limit mag 5.8

7Nov07: 10pm This broad object being fairly low sufferd from the softer southern skies. Central area was darker than the broad outer shell with small amount of irregularity in the broad outer shell.

7Nov07: 1124pm Very thin 4x1 elongation close to RA axis DeepMap600 draws it's orientation ok on large map, just off edge! but on North Polar Map orientation is 90 deg off and I noticed all elongated galaxies are horizontal to the map paper so maybe this is a well-known flaw in DeepMap. (Still GOTTA love that map!)

7Nov07: 7:52pm Large and interresting cluster > 50 stars and medium range in magnitude with most about the same mag. Central group appears to me like a cup with some fill in the bottom. Also a long string leading away from the core could be a long handle.

This object illuded me so I moved on. Maybe its nebuloscity is faint and requires messing with filters which I did not get to try. NGC 6572 PK 34+11.1 PNG 34.6+11.8 Plan 9.0p 11.0" 13.1 2a STE 18 12 06.4 +06 51 11

Skipped this tonight as it is the 'Blinking Nebula' and have seen it many times. One of the best veiws for me was at High Sierra party 2 months back where Chris Kelly had it in his 14" and it was bright enough to not blink.

7Nov07: 7:00pm was unable to detect square shape. Nebuloscity seems not quit uniform perhaps.
