Holmes Comet in my backyard

Jay Critchfield

Still not feeling well from a week old head cold I was on my way to bed when I checked my email for the first time today. As the plethora of emails was coming in I thought to myself "Oh great, another full moon and TAC's gone mad again". As I read a few posts about the comet I decided it would be worth a look before bed. In my mind it was too much effort to setup the 12" Albertscope or even go out to the car to get the bino's so I decided to grab the ST80 I use as a guide scope and an old EQ2 mount setup on a Bogen photo tripod. I soon realized I had loaned out the tripod to a friend. Sooooo..... now being fully commited to seeing the comet, 30 minutes later (twice as long as it would have taken to setup the Dob) I have the ST80 on the EQ2, C-clamped to my surveyors tripod on the back deck with a 25mm Plossel and a 5x powermate. I'm hopeless.

The family came out and took a look. We saw pretty much what everyone else has described other than not seeing any color which I believe is due to the optics of the ST80. At least it wasn't purple ;-)
