Another comet Holmes report ...

Vince Dee

Leann and I just returned from the Lawrence Hall of Science parking lot in Berkeley. This was our first opportunity to view a comet. The comet was easily visible with the naked eye and appeared to have a yellow tinge to it. With 20x80 binoculars you could just make out the fuzziness.

We brought out the 8" Dobsonian and the comet appeared mostly white. We viewed from 30x (40mm) and tried various eyepieces all the way to a 4mm barlowed (600x just for laughs. The comet was basically just a white blob that quickly passed through the FOV). We settled on 10mm (120x), which allowed us to see the bright white of the comet in the middle of a large ball of haze. It was fascinating.

So even through the awful light pollution and nearly full harvest moon, Comet Holmes was great to look at.
