10/20/2007: Sat 20 Oct 2007 Coe

by Matthew Marcus

I only went there because I had spent the day indoors, so I wanted some outside time, and I saw 3 OIs on the website. I arrived to find Vince and his wife Lianne camped in their van. Also present were the moon and lots of wind. I wanted fresh air, I sure got it! Since the moon was so bright, we just basically did eye candy. M31 and the Double Cluster were barely visible to the naked eye. The Milky Way was visible from Cassiopia to Aquila but petered out before it got to Saggitarius. As the night wore on, a couple of couples showed up and we had a nice little star party. However, the wind kept up, so Coe lived up to its reputation for wind. Vince had a pair of big binos on a light tripod and it blew over. Fortunately, it seems to be OK except for some scuffs. I didn't even think about putting up the Ranger. Once Mars was up, we tried to see it in Vince's Dob (my car blocked it from my C8) but the wind made it impossible to stay on it at any reasonable mag. Anyway, I left at midnight, leaving Vince camped out. He intended to nap and then get up and observe when the moon was down.
