Comet McNaught from Menlo Park, 1/11/07

by Pentti Kanerva

It sounded too good to be missed so I went to Burgess Park, which has a clear view of the Skyline Ridge due west. Got there at 5:15 when the Sun had already fallen below. After a minute or so of scanning along the ridge with small binoculars (9x25, 5.6 degree view) saw this bright object with a tail; then saw also Venus higher up and to the left, about 20 degrees away as George had noted. Shared the view with a young couple who were walking by. The comet was barely visible also to the naked eye. At 5:32 it disappeared behind the ridge. A quarter hour well spent!
