Calstar

by Mark Bracewell

First! (had to. )

Posting on behalf of my 13 y.o. son, Adrian (aka Ajax), his first CalStar and first nights of properly dark skies with a scope. His Dad is so proud... Ajax may write up a proper OR of his own, but here's what he observed (with an 80mm f/6 nighthawk):

Jupiter - too far down to see the spot
Uranus - it *is* green, moves really fast at 400x! (in 10")
Neptune - it *is* blue, smaller (also 10")

e. Lyrae " interesting "
Learned a few constellations, Pegasus (thanks Jamie - that really stuck), Cassiopeia, Sag, Cap...
Some Ha solar views (thanks to ? - didn't get your name)
A blinking satellite
A plane
And much more.

Many of these found on his own - the second night he went back and found Uranus and Neptune on his own using the Nighthawk and a mag 6.5 chart - really cool.

Favorite quotes:

"which one of those guys is Fred?" (of Fred's steaks)
"look at all that dust" (was the milky way, I don't think he's ever really seen it before)
"I'm gonna stay up really late" (found asleep in chair at scope 20 mins later)

Anyhow, he had a great time, and he and I want to thank you all for being so friendly - esp. Jamie and Dan, he thinks you're all very cool, as do I.
