Coe 4/30: Brief OR

by Géza Kurczveil

Since I haven't observed in over 3 months I decided to go up to Coe (for the first time) on Sunday evening even though I had school on Monday. My main targets were galaxies (around Leo, Virgo, Corvus, Coma Berenices, Canes Venatici, and Ursa Major), THE comet, and Jupiter. My aid was an 8" Dobson.

Instead of giving you a list of all the objects, I'll just summarize: Wow.

I would not have thought I could bag N4038.

4565 and 4656 were simply amazing.

NEVER have I seen this much detail in Jupiter's bands; there were ovals everywhere. And the GRS too.

The comet's B and C components showed up very nicely, but I couldn't find G and R. No big deal.

But the best was Abell 39. This has always been my favorite PN. I wasn't planning on observing it, so I didn't have detailed charts on me, but as I scanned the region I noticed something (about 20% of the time with averted vision). I sketched it, and once I got home I checked it; yes, I saw Abell 39. With 8" and an O-III: Wohoooo.

Sorry for the lack of details. I spent more time on having fun than on taking detailed notes.
