Coe- Brief OR

by Richard Navarrete

In a word, Coe was OUTSTANDING last night. Though a bit breezy before dark, things settled down and the fog rolled in to the valley below. Skies, according to Mark Wagner's Finnish triangle count, were mag 7. The drive up the road was magnificent. Deer beside the road, lots of wildflowers - Indian Paintbrush, two kinds of Lupine, Poppies, Shooting Star... lots of birds - Red-tailed hawks, quail, woodpeckers, scrub jays, crows, blackbirds, nuthatches. The hills are green and the reservoir is full. A great start to a fun night of observing.

I concentrated my observing to Hydra and Virgo, places where I still have a lot of objects on the Herschel II list. I managed 36 new objects using an 18" Obsessio and mostly a 20 Nagler. Viewed the comet through Rich's AP and Rashad's nice 80mm refractor (William's optics?) Just before tearig down for the night I got some highly detailed views of Jupiter. The great pale spot was almost dead center of the planet with it's four bright moons doing a little dance around the planet. Lots of ovals festoons, bands etc.

Crawled into the truck around 3 a.m. and fell right to sleep.
