Deep Impact animation from Montebello

by Peter Santangeli

I spent most of the evening shooting Deep Impact from Montebello. I shot a series of about 50 3 minute images, binned 2x2 with my ST-8 through a C11. I was not guiding the scope - Since I was frequently recentering, that seemed too much effort.

The following are the animated results:

(Or for the very few Flash-player-deprived out there, here is a far lower quality animated GIF: http://www.santangeli.net/tempel/tempel.gif - yer killing me though!)

I spent some time today making sure that the images were reasonably aligned, and that more importantly, the histograms were equivalent. You will see that the sequence clearly documents the brightening that many have reported.

It was a fun night. Enjoy, and feel free to forward around to other visual observers that were not *quite* sure they saw something brighten!
