South Pacific

by Rob Hawley

Last night I was able to set up the telescope on my balcony and do some observing. I wanted to quickly check a number of the bright southern objects. Weather last night was scattered clouds at sunset, but clear above about 30 degrees by 10PM. The LMC was visible, but the SMC was in the muck. The southern Milky way was bright.

I am using my 80mm Orion 80ST on an Universal Astronomics(sp?) mount. That arraignment works fairly well on the ship. If you sit down you can smoothly track objects in the sky as the boat moves.

I spent a lot of time last night on the Carina area. With a 20mm lens I only have about 20x. Even so with a O3 filter the Carina nebula stands out well. There was another nearby object that I now think was the Running Chicken. The area was rich in OCs and other nebulas

There is supposed to be a public session tonight .
