Montebello 9 March 2005

by Peter McKone

Best night of the year, so far. Good turnout. The "usual suspects", as George Feliz put it. Marek, Joe-Bob. A refractor owner, whose name is excaping me. At the SE end of the parking lot were a Teleport (was the owner's name Kevin?), a 6" AP refractor, and an enthusiastic group of students from Meno School. It's embarrasing to remember the names of the telescopes, but not the owners. Need to work on that.

Seeing was excellent. Clean splits of double stars 2-omega Leo (sep 0.6"), STT 517 (sep 0.6") (just south of another double 17-Ori), 52 Ori (sep 1.0") (Joe-Bob's discovery). Saw a star trailing Serius, but not for long enough to make a claim. Saturn looked like a photo. Eskimo too. Marek (or should I say "Annie") was showing a beautiful view of the Ghost of Jupitor. More texture than I remember seeing before.

Bob recommended a look at STF 1400, next to NGC 3077. Not labeled in TheSky, but it should be.

If the weather were like this every night, I wouldn't need any other hobbies!
