01/08/05 -- Machholz and clouds

by William G. Schultz

I was lucky to find a small patch of open sky last evening. The Plieades and Comet Machholz were fortunately in the middle of the open sky region.

The comet was directly observable by eye. I was surprised to see the movement since New Year's Day, the first time I saw the object. The juxtaposition with the OCl was quite pleasant.

First, I used my father's old nautical binos, and surveyed the FOV. I had some time to drag out the XT-8. I popped the top and got maybe ten whole minutes of EP time. I shared the FOV with our children, but the hole closed in just as my wife's turn came up.

The timing for this object couldn't be worse with the rainy season. I'd look at this object every night, if I could.
