I did it!

by Dennis Beckley

The rain gods have been most unkind for the last several days so I didn't have much hope of catching Comet Machholz tonight at it's closest approach to the Pleiades. Around 10:00 on a whim I poked my head out the back door and to my amazement there was a huge sucker hole centered right over the Pleiades! Rushing back inside I grabbed my Swift 7x50 binoculars and was treated to a grand sight of the seven sisters and fantastic Comet Machholz all in the field of view! I just had time to bring out my Orion Short Tube 80mm and view it through my 35 mm ultrascopic before the rain returned and I ran back inside. It was a beautiful sight! I could even see a faint gas tail as well as a broader dust tail.
