Treasue Hunts and TGOs

by Rich Neuschaefer

I stuck around until a little after 2 am. Between 1am and 2am the high clouds started moving toward us in a serious way. I had packed up my scope after Mark left. Jerry E. and I had a fun time hanging out with the hard core observers. :-) Very little wind. About 60 deg F. The transparency was very good. Even the seeing was quite good. We could easily see the Winter Milky Way go to the east of Betelgeuse and across Canis Major.

We had a beautiful view of comet Machholz before most of the folks left. It is an easy binocular object. For those who don't know me, when I said the view in my scope was better to someone across the parking lot, I was kidding. I hadn't even looked Machholz in the 17" Dob he was using, but I have looked through that scope many times in the past and it could easily give a better view of the comet than my 6" scope.

Our new astrophotographer, June, has one of her new scopes (Tak FS-1021) working. It was giving beautiful views of a number of the M objects and the comet.

We did have a temp inversion, 60 deg F at the Coe parking lot and 42 deg F at the coldest point on my drive home (Hwy 101 a little north of Morgan Hill).
