Saturday Night 11/13 at Fiddletown

by Shneor Sherman

Only Dennis Beckley and I showed up for what turned out to be quite a decent night, despite occasional dampness. I began observing a bit after 6 p.m. and continued until a bit after 3:30 a.m. I just love these long winter nights!

Dennis showed me four comets and some interesting planetaries. I returned the favor with several other planetaries as well as some stunning binoviewer views. What can I say - I began observing in Lyra and Aquarius and finished in Coma and Virgo. I looked for the Double Quasar in Ursa Major, but although NGC3079 was quite stunning, and I easily found the field the quasar is in, conditions were not good enough to to see it. At one point, checking the sky, I counted 8 stars in Ursa Minor. Except near the zenith, conditions were not good enough for the most part past 200x-250x, but I did have a lovely view of the Peanut Nebula at 500x.

The night began with a lot of dew. I had to zap my secondary three times, but after around 7:30, it dried out a bit. I had occasional dew on the eyepiece in the focuser, but not on the eyepieces sitting on my ladder.

The lights from the house on the hill went on around 7 or 7:30, and were shut off by around 8:30.

This was quite a decent night, and I'm surprised no one else showed up.

Did anyone go to IHOP?
