Perseids from Cameron Park
by Jake Burkart
Went to a friends house in Cameron Park and setup the scope at 9:00 p.m. to
photograph an Iridium Flare, and possibly some shooters. Got a nice photo
of the flare. After the kids were put to bed the adults all lounged in the
front yard in various lawn chairs waiting for the show. We saw shooters
consistently (approx 20-30/hour) throughout the night. I was up until 3:00
a.m. watching. The peak of activity seemed to be just before 2:00 a.m. when
I saw about 6 nice shooters within a minute.
One interesting note, last night I saw some of the shortest shooting stars
I've ever seen. A few tiny quickies spanned less than 5 degrees across the
sky.
I shot some 5 minute exposures just pointing at random parts of the sky.
Don't know yet if I caught any streaks. I will post if there are any cool
photos.
