Perseids from Skyline and Hwy 92

by Stacy Jo McDermott

Since I was not able to make my blessed presence felt at Montebello last night, I decided to head up to Skyline (Hwy 35) to see if I could find a place to quietly watch the Persied Meteor Shower, if only for a while (it's a work day night - and let me tell you...it was hard getting up this morning!) I found a nice pull off about a mile south of the intersection of 92 and 35...and there were a couple of cars there when I arrived at midnight.

There was nice blanket of fog over the coast covering just about everything up to the 400' level (this is a guess). The weather was pleasantly warm and I settled in to watch the show.

I saw about one meteor every 2-3 minutes and about 75% of them had nice colour (mostly green, a red/yellow one one almost blue one). I ended up staying for only about an hour because it dawned on me that there was no little astronomers' room! Yep, the one thing that wasn't available dictated my short observing session.

However, it was nice to get out, tuddle up 92, classical music playing on the stereo to watch. Maybe this weekend there will still be a show (an encore?!).
