Lick 7/23/04, Black Inversion Laminar Layer

by James Turley

Present last night at Lick were Rich N., Dan Wright, Heather M, and Mark (Sheriff of the Mountain, and observer) and myself, set up outside for the "Music of the Spheres" concert.

In the moon shadow of the Great 36" Lick Dome, to the angelic strains of a Paraguayan harp, under a sugary Milky Way sky, touched by a soft warm Summer breeze, we showed bright objects to transfixed guests until early morning. When we descended the mountain, enchanted by the events of the Night, the entire horizon was shrouded with that laminar black inversion layer of legend -- from North beyond Mt. Tam, whose summit was just visible, to the point of Cone Peak at Big Sur. Not a light was visible. Only the peaks of the highest mountains stood up, like some jubilant gathering Greek Gods.

A night to remember. Like most at Lick.
