Shenzhen, China 030804

by Stacy Jo McDermott

Last week, I spent my time in Shenzhen, China due to a work related event. Shenzhen is about 50 miles from HongKong on the mainland. It is a very large city (6 million people) with quite an air pollution problem due to heavy industry and abundant construction.

I was able to observe the sun with no appropriate filter - the amount of air pollution provided a safe filter in which to do so.

Later that evening, while we were out, I was able to discern Jupiter and only Jupiter due to the glare of the street lights, building lights and Las Vegas - style signage as well as the air pollution.

Shenzhen, while interesting, is not high on my list of ideal observing areas, not even for an urban setting. You see more from Los Angeles than you do in Shenzhen. I'm sure that getting out to the country would provide a decent observing area, due to work schedule, I was not able to get outside the city limits.
