Miraloma, Wed 3/26
by Jane Houston Jones
Four of us brought telescopes to Family Math Night at Miraloma
Elementary up above Portola Drive in San Francisco last night. Very
windy but clear. But Mike Portuesi's and my twin f/7 10-inch
Dobson-class-made reflectors were mostly up to the challenge. The two
other 'scopes were a 6-inch f/5 reflector and an Orion StarMax Mak/Cass
which Mojo and Jim Mace valiantly aimed at Jupiter, Saturn, Sirius and
M42 or they switched to the bigdobs depending on the crowds or the wind.
Views were excellent, and dozens of math-minded mini-astronomers came up
to have a look, clutching their gumdrop and toothpick tetrahedrons,
cubes and pyramids and other fun math activities they'd been working on
in the classrooms upstairs. All in all, a great way to spend a short
Wednesday night.
