Ancient Photons

by Shneor Sherman

It was a real treat Saturday night at Blue Canyon to finally catch a glimpse of the Double Quasar in Ursa Major - and thanks to Gregg Blandin and Alvin Huey for pointing their telescopes at it. It was visible intermittently in Alvin's 22", two ghostly points flickering in and out of view simultaneously, with what appeared to be a bluish cast (the color is probably averted imagination). The view was there all the time in Gregg's 25", two very faint points near a square made by four stars. Those photons took 8 billion years to get here, nearly 2/3 the age of the universe. Gives a different perspective on things, to be sure.
