Leonids at Coe

by Rich Neuschaefer

Just briefly, Coe was packed. The skies cleared near midnight and we had a get time.

The frequency of the storm was amazing up to about 5 am. Several Leonids had smoking trails that stayed visible for 10 minutes or more. Some folks were watching the glowing trails through binoculars. I'll leave it to others for the count per hour. I think is was well over one per second at the peak of the shower.

I got to Coe late (6pm) because I thought the heavy cloud cover would keep people away. About half the sky at Coe had clouds. By 9pm maybe 90 percent of the sky was clouds. By around 10pm things started looking better in the west. More people started arriving, mostly the general public. The overflow lot was packed up near the entrance. The road to the park HQ buildings was one line of cars. The road became a parking lot.

We had a great time watching the Leonids.
