Orange tennis ball at the Peak

by Rich Neuschaefer

Jay and I had our telescopes set up in the Peak's southwest parking lot. There was only a light breeze. Just a few visitors. We were ready for a great night of lunar and planetary observing. Jay had his new AP 10" MC. I had my AP 180EDT. Unfortunately, most of the night Mars looked like an orange tennis ball. The seeing would occasionally let us glimpse a few features on Mars, but most of the time Mars was virtually featureless. It was one of the poorest nights of seeing I've had at Fremont Peak.

A lady came by with her husband and daughter. She's interested in amateur astronomy. They have a small refractor at home. She and her 12 year old daughter were have a good time looking at the Moon through my scope and asking lots of questions about the Moon, distances to different stars, life in other parts of the universe, etc. She's going to look at the TAC website so she can join us at some of our star parties.
