Saturday at the Peak

by Rich Neuschaefer

Saturday, May 26th, 2001 about 8 of us were at Fremont Peak in the SW parking lot. The sky was quite clear for the first couple of hours. The seeing was quite good. Peter Natcher and I could see three rills in the bottom of crater Petavius. Later, when Mars was up maybe 25 degrees, you could see the sky around Mars was not very black. There was high thin gunk in the air. The seeing was good, but not as good as earlier in the evening. I using about 340x. You could see the polar cap and two large dark features, one had some nice detail. Again, the seeing wasn't bad, I could easily split the closer component of Nu Scorpio.

After about 1am more high clouds. By close to 2 am the clouds were still a problem but the seeing wasn't bad. I could still split the closer component of Nu Scorpio.

I got some sleep in my truck. But about 9 am the high clouds were still coming over the area. I did a little bird watching and by sunset there was a break in the high clouds. I got some very nice views of craters Posidonius, Theophilus and Cyrllus. Then the high clouds came back and I packed up and headed for home.
