Memorial Day at Plettstone... worth remembering

by Stone, Michelle

We had beautiful weather and clear skies. Warm on Thursday night but cooled off to delightfull temperatures by Sunday.

All nights were very nice with exception of Friday when high clouds rolled in around midnight and were bothersome until 1AM or so.

We had a few visitors on Saturday and Sunday night. Just right... nice skies and nice friends to share them with.

I had POC set up on the Losmandy pier outside the observatory. POC is a Celestron 6" refractor. I had hopes of capturing Mars in it to see how well it would do. But the delight of the weekend was viewing Mars through the C14 with a 3 inch mask in the Televue Binoviewer. I would have to say that it is the second best I have seen Mars. Great dark areas masked large portions of both hemispheres. I spent an hour on it at least with both scopes. No, I'm not turning into a planet freak... it's just that I don't get a very good opportunity to see Mars that good.

I spent a great deal of time hunting miserable planetary nebulae in Ophiuchus and surrounding area. Some of those little babies are hard to find.... and I cheat! But find and verify them I did with a great sense of accomplishment for seeing something majorly new this trip out.

Of course, all of the spring favorites pulled me in for at least a quick look see. These included some of the large galaxies and the summer nebulae and globulars.

I had a great weekend. I wish that it were another 4 days longer ;)
