Saturday Night at FP: SRO!

by Phil Chambers

I will further add to Clays report that there was a considerable inversion. The evening started out at 66 deg and about 42 % hum. It got down to 62 or so around midnight and by 2am it was 68deg and I was taking stuff off. However on the drive down it was very cold, and it was punctuated by foxes, deer, a bobcat, and a possum.

The seeing was ocsillating on a time interval of about twice a second. Mars was never more than a blob although I thought I saw some white and one of the poles.

Jeff had his new 15 incher set up next to Bob Cz's 14.5(?) and some nice views were had via those. Bob spent a long time trying to coax ngc4266 out from behind the star. I stared at it for awhile also (through his and my own C11). I didnt ever get anything but imagination glows, however Bob said he finally made it appear.

Eric was trying to image but gusting breezes all night prevented much of that. It would be calm for a few minutes and then a gentle gust would appear from nowhere.

Set up next to me on the other side of me was some folks I didnt recognize. They had many friends with kids up and were getting a constant stream of lectures on the stars and cosmos. It was kind of nice. The kids didnt bother anyone and parents and all seemed interested in the explanations.

It was a nice night. The C11 hasnt been out in awhile. I have decided some tune up is required before Lassen. There is a clunk in one of the bearing housings as I turn it from side to side in Az.

There were many more folks and scopes than I expected. The list only gave hints of about 4 or 5 going up.
