Friday afternoon solar observing report

by Stacy McDermott

Finally, got some observing in...at work no less. Before heading out this morning, I grabbed the delta flyer (80mm ST) and my solar filter. Best thing I've done all week.

During lunch, I set up my telescope with it's white light solar filter. Amazing views...I counted 38 solar spots using a 15mm parks 5 element eye piece. This is the first time I've seem so many sunspots...the biggest one does indeed resemble a seahorse.

Considering how active our star is, I'm wondering if we will have the pleasure of seeing some auroras down our way. Anyone know?

Also showed some colleagues and they were quite intrigued. I re-iterated that solar viewing should only be done with proper precautions and equipment. All in all, a welcomed spot of observing. Have fun all you doggies this weekend, where ever you may be...
