Lake Sonoma 17th Mar, Weather Notes and upcoming Marathon

by David Staples

Not much to add to Roberts report. The Jupiter moon that disappeared was Io, I missed that but was able to observe Io's shadow transit through and past the GRS. In addition to all of the wonderful fixed sights in the heavens we were treated to quite a few meteors. S&T lists these as a shower complex called the Virginids, at least half a dozen minor showers throughout March spread around Virgo near the ecliptic.

It was amazing how much easier it is to find things when the sky is dark and you know where to look. My first try to find M51 in my backyard took forever, up at Lake Sonoma, about a minute. Most of that minute was getting my finder lined up. Note to self: get a Telrad.

Even if it had stayed cloudy all night it would still have been worth the trip. It was great to finally meet a fellow TACo. I want to say thanks to Robert for his patience, I'm sure he could have bagged a few more M numbers if he hadn't been answering all of my questions and helping me find stuff.

All in all a great night and I'll be there next weekend to try again. So anyone else that shows up...be ready, I'm coming loaded with even more questions. I'm determined to learn from the experts (hope that doesn't scare anyone off).
