Wednesday night observing report

by Matthew Marcus

I was there, too. It was definitely worth it even with the clouds. The seeing was very good, allowing nice images of Jupiter and Saturn. I got there too late to do Venus against blue sky. Bruce Jensen was there with his light bucket and introduced me to several interesting objects such as Thor's Helmet (nebula, ngc2359, with a fainter IC object superimposed) and Abell 12, which is a 12th-mag PN right next to 3rd-mag Mu Orionis. This makes it a tough test of stray light even with an OIII filter, which Bruce lent me. Thanks. I also got a smattering of other objects which I'd have to look up in my log. Too bad the bright globs weren't up; the seeing would have made them show up really well. I didn't think to go after M79.
