Jupiter: white intrusion into NEB?

by Akkana Peck

Dave and I took a look at Jupiter last night at a little after 11pm (say 0710 UT 11/20/2000), through his 6" f/8 dob, and I noticed something I'd never seen before. There's a white intrusion -- a long, slim, curve, sort of like an inverse festoon -- from the EZ into the NEB. It preceeds the GRS by a bit less than 90 degrees. It didn't look like a train of ovals or turbulence, like I'm used to seeing near the GRS (and in any case, it was in the other band). The north side of the NEB was somewhat wider near the intrusion.

I made a sketch: http://www.shallowsky.com/images/sketch/jup11192k.jpg (full res) or http://www.shallowsky.com/images/sketch/jup11192kT.jpg (smaller).

Has anyone else seen this feature?
