Quadrantids report

1/4/99

by Pierre St. Hilaire

The sky was overcast in Belmont yesterday so I went to bed, to awaken at 3:30 am. At that time I found the sky to be mediocre, with high clouds drifting in and out, but decided to give it a shot and went in the backyard in my sleeping bag. From 3:40 am to 5:15 am I counted 17 Quadrantids and 2 sporadics. Because of the clouds a ZHR estimate is a guess at best, but taking account of the obscurations I got a pretty constant ZHR of about 40-50 thourough the period. Most meteors were in the +2 to 0 magnitude range, and no fireball was seen.
