Briefer Henry Coe Report...

by Jay Reynolds Freeman

I went to Coe Saturday evening. Perhaps 20 other meteorological optimists were present. By the time I arrived, somewhat before six, the band of clouds to the west seemed ominous enough that I decided not to set up. Sure enough, an hour or so later, the zenith was obscured, and I left.

Many people who had already set up were enjoying the view to the east, however, and for all I know it cleared up as soon as I drove down the hill. (I am not sure the sacrificial lamb effect works if you don't set up a telescope, though.)

I did get to make two observations, though: The new nova in Aquila had faded considerably since the preceding night -- there was a brief gap when the sky was dark enough to see it and still clear enough that it could be seen. But Jupiter had not faded at all... (I had a nice view through Rashad's 12-inch.)
