Leonids@Coe

by David Richard Smith

I observed from Henry Coe. Raw scores for Leonids vs. time (PST):

0000-0030 0
0030-0100 1
0100-0130 2
0137-0200 4
0200-0220 6
0240-0305 5
0412-0420 7 (6 of them in 2 minutes 0412-0414)
0433-0456 10

Grand total of 35 Leonids, plus 3 Taurids and 2 sporadics in 3hr 16min observing time. Pretty uniform, none spectacular. Time gaps are due to dozing off. Wild estimates for overhead limiting magnitude: 4.5 at 0000 gradually deepening to 5.5 at 0220. Suddenly 4.5 at 0240, worsening to 4.0 at the end.

The lesson I draw from this is that having the radiant overhead trumps sky condition and time since the peak in Europe.

For comparison, here are my results from Coe in 1998. This was the night after the peak, but the sky was very dark, revealing a spectacular zodiacal light:

0100-0130 0
0130-0200 2
0200-0230 4
0230-0300 4
0300-0330 10
0330-0354 10
0408-0416 2

for a total of 32 Leonids, plus 7 Taurids and 2 sporadics in 3 hr 2 min observing time. Of these, I classed 18 Leonids as fireballs, and one Taurid as a spectacular bolide.
