Brief Moon Impressions

by Dave North

It was a pretty good night for secondaries west of Langrenus. I habitually check these just 'cuz they're fun, but they also give me an idea how the seeing is. They were blinking at 155x last night, so that's kind of average to minus.

The interesting observations? A scarp at the northeast of Crisium was placed to create a big triangular shadow (I'd guess 80 x 100 Km or more) that looked like a pie slice cut out of the edge of the moon. Never seen that one before...

East of Endymion, Mare Humboldtianum's shock rings were showing: the outer one was more distinct than I've ever seen it before, but the inner somewhat subtle right on the terminator. Under some lights this huge construct seems almost as impressive as Orientale.

Also curious was a long scarp starting halfway between Endymion and Crisum along the terminator, running most of the way to the Mare. Just east of its distal terminus there were two small craters with a trench running between them. I use the word trench as it looked too wide and structured to be any familiar kind of rille. In the confusion of light and craters it proved to be a bit much to identify the guilty parties, so ... ooops!
