Sunrise in the Alps

by Matt Tarlach

Had a few minutes to look at the moon earlier tonight from my back yard in the 6" f5 Newt; despite the low altitude of Luna and generally icky seeing, was able to find the Hyginus rille at 250x. Also, just south of the Alpine Valley I watched as first sunlight struck one of the Alps, turning it into a brilliant white point against the surrounding, still-dark lowlands. For a few minutes it was small and bright enough to throw a diffraction pattern, complete with spikes from my spider. In the poor seeing the brilliant peak was twinkling like a star, and made me think of how easily such an apparition could be mistaken for some kind of eruption - good thing I read S&T and know there's no such things as TLPs! (maybe)
