Montebello Wednesday

by David Kingsley

I worried all the way up Page Mill Road last night about the position of the fog looming on the ridge and jumping it at many locations. Fortunately, the Montebello site stayed clear of fog the whole evening. The next time I know I am going up to Montebello, I will try to prearrange a flashlight show from the ridge at a particular time with Bill Arnett so he can pinpoint the location as seen from his home. Just a bit north or south and I think we would have been clouded out.

I had a very productive and enjoyable night working on new Hershel 400 objects from about 8:30 to 12:30. The seeing was very soft for much of the night, but it was great to be out for a low key observing session with a half dozen or so other observers.

I set up the scope briefly in the driveway when I returned home about 1 am, hoping to catch a predicted Walter sunshine ray I thought I had seen listed on a lunar site. No luck, but the seeing had steadied up and there was a very nice shadow transit in progress on Jupiter. Beautiful inky black dot superimposed on an equatorial belt and fair amount of detail visible on the planet. Great way to cap off a nice night of observing.
