Starting about 2am PDT [August 4, 1999], I saw a much later phase of the Walter sunset ray than is shown by the photo on http://www.ezonline.com/ash/dm-lunar.htm. As I saw it, the ray was only as wide as the central peaks. It looked almost like a cathedral being illuminated from ground level. Very cool. By 3am it was almost gone, with the shadow of the little hill near the rim cleft reaching to the central peaks and the ray narrowed to a thin line.
I took some exceedingly poor quality afocal images with my Mavica handheld digital camera. I'll post one later after I get some sleep.
