Wednesday Night Observing

by Peggy Bernard

Fair night observing Wednesday 5/5/99, back yard South San Jose. Sky clear and steady. No wind. City Sky glow to west and north.

Start 2015 hours with Venus. At 312X see nice 1/2 phase and maybe some cloud tops?

Nights program target is Ursa Major. Sky not dark enough until 2100.

Found M81 and M82. M81 is the edge on? Both look good in the 32 mm 36x and up to 104x. Tried NGC 2976 and 3077 but sky not dark enough.

Found M51. Looks like two galaxies sort of colliding.

Tried M101 but it's too diffuse and the sky to light to see. Think I heard of this problem before with 101?

Looked a Polaris A and B. B is mag 9. Did a little columniation tweaking and fine tuned things a bit.

Ended up on Alcor and Mizar. Nicely split Mizar A and B after columniation tweaks.

No Mars as it was too low and behind a tree.
