Venus and Jupiter

by William B. Phelps

We started out at Foothill College Observatory, but the clouds were building up there, so we drove down to Memorial Park (Mary & Stevens Creek, across from DeAnza college) and set up there. Managed to get set up in time to catch the appulse, but thin high clouds obscured much detail on Jupiter for a couple of hours. Then around 2 pm it cleared up, and what a treat! It was well worth the wait - a beautiful gibbous Venus, and lots of banding on Jupiter, at around 135x (AP SF180, Zeiss bino, TV 15mm Panoptics). Amazing to be able to see both planets at this magnification! Entertained about a 100 people or so with the view during the course of the day...

We'll be back at Foothill College Observatory this evening; expecting the public and a TV crew or two...
