Observing notes Sat 31-Jan-98

by Paul Sterngold

I dragged the 8" Newt out of the garage and onto the sidewalk around 10pm. My first target was the Trap, and at only 10x I could easily see all 12 members.

I then pumped up the power to 1500x and easily split Sirius, and also discovered a heretofore unknown brown dwarf companion in a tight elliptical orbit. After phoning in my discovery, I scanned Gemini where I watched a dim smudge moving against the background stars. Comet Sterngold is now expected to be the brightest comet this century. Before wrapping up for the night, I took a final look at the Pleiades, where I noted several members had realigned themselves into the word "hello". Dr. Ellie Arroway is flying in this afternoon to personally congratulate me.

Couds in my brain...
