Last Night at Fremont Peak
By Mike J. Shade

Well, I didn't think the seeing last night was very good at all. I think the slight breezes and setting up so near the peak contributed to the poor seeing.

It was interesting to compare the views of Jupiter and Saturn through different telescopes. Michelle Stone and I both looked through our 18s at Jupiter and the view was equally unimpressive through each telescope: A boiling mess of something. Very briefly I could see some detail but these periods were brief.

Smaller telescopes sure did have an advantage when it came to the planets. Rich's 7" AP also seemed to suffer from the effects of the atmosphere more than on previous occasions. Saturn looked nice but little detail was seen with the 18".

However, it did impress several newbies who were present. However the night was not a total loss: Bill used the 18" to see the little IC galaxy near M13 and I did hunt down some little planetaries in Cyngus.

I can't wait until next weekend but am not looking forward to the crowd. Anyone want to try Sunday night instead?
