Planets in Daylight

by Dave Atherton

Earlier in December, somebody mentioned that Venus could be seen during daylight. Well, I have since enjoyed catching Venus several times during the day using the unaided eye and binos.

Today, however, I finally setup my 8" SCT (in the shade!) and showed Venus to relatives and neighbors. As an experiment, I aimed the scope at where Jupiter should be and, somewhat surprisingly, there it was. At 1430 PST, I was able to see the disk with 2 dark bands but no moons. It was only slightly brighter than the surrounding sky. I was wasn't able to see it unaided(ly) or through the 9x50 finder but there it was in the main scope.

(Jupe! There it is.)
