Last night at 2am (local time) I went out in my driveway to try to find Comet Tabur. I live in the middle fo San Jose CA; the naked-eye limiting magnitude is about 3 :-( Starry Night showed me exactly where to look (just up and right from Theta UMa) but no luck. There was just too much sky glow.
I woke up at 6am and tried again. By this time Tabur was, of course, much higher in the sky and was easy in my 8x56 binoculars. This is one bright comet! If it weren't for everyone getting excited by Hale-Bopp, Tabur would be a pretty big deal. Don't miss it.
Better yet, for those of us alergic to morning, Tabur should soon be visible in the evening. It might even be visible in the evening today from a dark site.
