Beautiful Crescent Venus
By Bill Arnett

At about 7:00 PM local time today I went out to try to find Venus. It was MUCH more difficult than a few days ago (I was using only binoculars and a tripod-mounted Pronto). Sky & Telescope says it should still be at mag -4.2 or so but Voyager II says -2.0. I think I believe the -2.0. Even though I knew its alt/az coordinates, I had to search around for more than 10 minutes before I finally found it. But the search was worth it!

A tiny thin (Voyager says 6%) crescent with very sharp horns. It's much better in the daylight than at night because of the lack of glare. I looked for the "ashen light" but saw no such thing (perhaps because I don't believe in it :-) I did seem to see the dark side of the disk as a darker patch, though. My wife thought she saw the dark disk, too. But I'm sure that's just a psychological illusion. All in all, the best view of Venus I've had.

If you want to see this, too, don't delay -- Venus is rapidly approaching the Sun. It might be interesting to see how many more days it can be found.
